Guest Keynote: Current status and challenges of developing data science talent through industry-academia collaboration

Japan is lagging behind in the fields of Data Science (DS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). To address this situation, universities are rapidly developing education in these areas, and companies are also advancing reskilling efforts for their workforce. University education in these fields requires more than just theoretical lectures; it is essential to incorporate Project-Based Learning (PBL) practices that solve real-world problems based on data. Industry-academia collaboration plays a critical role in such university education. Additionally, in terms of reskilling for professionals, in-house training in companies alone is insufficient, and collaboration with universities is effective. This presentation will discuss the current status and challenges of developing DS talent, based on experiences of industry-academia collaboration at the Faculty of Data Science of Shiga University.
