Speaker Bio
Born in New Jersey, US. After graduating from the Department of English Studies of the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Sophia University, she joined Fuji Television as an announcer. She later moved to the US because of her husband’s work. At New York University Graduate School, she majored in Media and the Environment and researched the impact of media on humanity and history. In April 2000, she became newscaster of “The Scoop” (TV Asahi). She was later engaged as newscaster of “The Scoop Special” “Hodo Station” and “Sunday Station.” She continues to travel to the front lines in Japan and abroad as a journalist and serves as news director of Japan for UNHCR director of Japan for UNHCR.

Since joining Fuji Television the year the Equal Employment Opportunity Act was enacted in Japan, I have spent my career working in the television industry. Why and how did I transition from variety shows to news reporting? What challenges have women working in the media faced, and how have they sought to overcome them? What has changed in television in Japan since the Showa era, and what has remained the same? Drawing from my own experiences and providing specific examples, I will share insights on career advancement for working women, addressing the issue of sexual discrimination, and finding fulfillment in the workplace.
