Speaker Bio
Born in Nara Prefecture, Ory Yoshifuji was unable to attend school from fifth grade through junior high school. While at high school, he invented of a new mechanism for electric wheelchairs, winning the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the Japan Science & Engineering Challenge (JSEC), and 3rd place at the world’s largest science competition, Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). At Waseda University, he began developing avatar robots to combat loneliness from 2009, and in 2012 founded Ory Laboratory, Inc. His work includes the avatar robot OriHime, the communication device OriHime eye+ switch for patients with ALS and other severe conditions, the wheelchair app WheeLog!, and the Avatar Robot Café, which enables bedridden individuals to work remotely. He is the author of Loneliness Can Be Erased*, The Cyborg Era*, and Weapons of the Future*.
