It was a surprise that most Tech companies only announced layoffs after Twitter announced it. There are still a lot of job openings in the market; most of them will get placed but may get different perks and packages. It may be the phase of rebalancing talent across tech companies.

I think moreso than their being any layoffs was the size of each layoff (many companies laying off 10%+) and snowballing effect of the layoffs (now even Amazon is laying off employees).  It seemed to switch VERY quickly from hiring freezes to straight up layoffs.

Unfortunately now it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, this many layoffs will definitely cause a recession which will cause further layoffs, etc.

The global issues we've faced the past few years were indicators that the trends of the past were unsustainable and that change was not only inevitable but imminent.  We've seen this in tech before with the past few booms and busts.  Excessive and lavishness hurt in the long-run for some of these tech companies.  Surprised?  No.  It's a bit of a gamble working in tech.  You get all the perks but also the downside of these cycles.

This was long coming. You can’t just over hire are inflate the valuation on the fly.
I am saddened to see so many tech folk’s being laid off but not surprised.
