Liana Bailey-Crimmins was appointed State Chief Information Officer and Director of the California Department of Technology by Gov. Gavin Newsom in June 2022. She provides comprehensive strategic advice to the governor on a range of technology issues, including best approaches to implement state technology-related strategic plans, policies, standards and enterprise architecture. She ensures California’s technology landscape remains resilient, secure, and innovative by optimizing IT operations and integrating emerging technologies like generative artificial intelligence, cloud services, and digital identity solutions.
Bailey-Crimmins has held several senior leadership positions in over 30 years of public service, including that of Chief Information Security Officer at the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), where she safeguarded the private data of nearly 2 million members and a $400 billion investment portfolio. She also served as its Chief Health Director and Chief Information Officer, as well as IT Director and CIO for California Correctional Health Care Services.
