“Copilot Accelerates Content Drafting and Summarization, Yet Sometimes Hallucinates”

Sep 18, 2025
My overall experience using Microsoft Copilot has been really good. The product significantly helps in productivity, as all Microsoft products now integrate Copilot, supporting the crafting of messages and information across applications like Word, Excel, and Teams chats. My organization primarily utilizes Microsoft 365 Copilot as an end-user for our day-to-day work. Specifically, in Word, we leverage it to create and understand documents, as well as for summarizing complex documents. In Outlook, Copilot offers various features, such as crafting messages based on raw feedback and coaching on the appropriate tone for communication. For Excel, it provides quick analysis capabilities, which means we no longer need to learn or Google specific formulas, making tasks quicker and easier. Additionally, in PowerPoint, it aids in creating presentations and slides based on the information or documents we provide. From an organizational perspective, the strategy behind implementing Copilot is to bring awareness to the entire workforce about AI products. It serves as a foundational tool for common users to become accustomed to prompt engineering and the general use of AI. While we do not currently track Copilot’s impact as part of our measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), we have received positive feedback regarding productivity improvements. Users have reported at least a 20% reduction in time spent on refining content created within these applications. When it comes to specific examples, quantifying time savings can be difficult due to varying use cases. However, for tasks like creating PowerPoint presentations, which might typically take a full day to gather and organize information, Copilot can save 20% to 30% of the time by generating an initial draft that then requires review and refinement. Our approach to rolling out Copilot has been phased, initially including individuals who have a direct need to interact with AI, and subsequently expanding to those who express interest. This phased implementation has resulted in a positive response. Regarding the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated responses, I would say they are pretty accurate, generally around 80% to 90%. Getting started with Copilot was quite easy for users. The basic functionality is intuitive, much like chatting with a person. Personally, I did not undergo formal prompt engineering training. Instead, I learned by refining my questions over time. I found that the first question might not always yield the most accurate result, so I would rephrase and ask more specific questions, which helped develop a "prompt engineering kind of mindset". This iterative process helped me understand how to phrase prompts more effectively over time, without needing explicit training to get started. Data security, privacy, and compliance are areas where I believe Microsoft Copilot performs really well. My organization agreed to adopt it because we understand that when questions are asked based on internal documentation within our SharePoint or other instances, the information does not leave our company's secure environment. This robust security and data compliance is a primary reason why organizations are willing to adopt it. My organization has also issued internal advisories and best practices, outlining what kind of data can be inputted and what should be refrained from using with Copilot. These guidelines are complemented by general learning materials and specific organizational trainings. I have also observed that within a chat session, Copilot can retain information from previous interactions and understand context, much like a human conversation. However, this retention does not extend once the chat session is closed. Based on my experience, I would give Microsoft Copilot an overall rating exceeds expectations. The primary reasons my organization purchased this product include the desire to create internal and operational efficiencies, drive innovation, and enhance decision-making. We also considered its potential to reduce time to market for certain initiatives. Key factors influencing this decision were Microsoft's strong services expertise, breadth of services, product roadmap and future vision, and pre-existing relationships with the vendor.

What I like most about Microsoft Copilot is its ability to significantly enhance productivity across various Microsoft 365 applications. The seamless integration into everyday tools like Word, Excel, and Teams is incredibly valuable for crafting messages and information. Two applications, in particular, have provided the most value: Excel: It has been very valuable for creating visualizations and analysis, especially when users might forget specific formulas. Copilot makes this process much quicker and easier. Outlook and Teams: From my position, I engage in extensive communication that requires a specific tone, depending on whether I'm addressing leadership or peers. Copilot helps me achieve the right tone faster by allowing me to provide a raw draft and generating a refined message based on the desired tone and audience. My top three most-loved features are: 1. Rephrasing: This feature is incredibly helpful because it often takes a considerable amount of time to get the tone and message precisely accurate. Copilot significantly assists in this process. 2. Summarization: It efficiently summarizes long email chains, saving me valuable minutes that would otherwise be spent manually sifting through information. 3. General coaching and language structure: Copilot helps in understanding how to structure language for different audiences and situations, which is crucial for effective communication. I also appreciate how intuitive the interface is, describing it as pretty basic and just like chatting with somebody. The fundamental functionality is very straightforward, requiring minimal learning. Furthermore, the robustness of its security and data compliance is a major advantage. Knowing that information remains within our company's instance and does not go outside is a primary reason why my organization, and others, are willing to adopt it. From a broader organizational standpoint, Copilot is playing a crucial role in bringing awareness about AI products and prompt engineering to the entire workforce. It's a general-use application, which makes it very hard to get wrong with it. The positive feedback regarding productivity improvements, including a reported 20% reduction in time for refining content and 20-30% time savings on tasks like PowerPoint presentations, further highlights its value.

Microsoft 365 Copilot works very well and intuitively with other M365 products. I am able to quickly use Copilot to find a specific document that I need, or even find specific information within a document. Copilot instantly summarizes emails and documents, saving you time and giving an accurate summary of the information you are attempting to ingest. Copilot also generates insightful and beneficial information when asking a question. All the answers have their sources provided for easy access as well.

While the overall experience with Copilot has been positive, there are a few areas that could be improved. Although the AI-generated responses are generally accurate, around 80% to 90%, inconsistencies arise when I ask it to perform specific actions. For instance, when I instruct it to create a table or a specific slide in PowerPoint or Word, it sometimes fumbles. There are occasions when it successfully performs the action, but at other times, it states it's unable to do so, even if it has completed a similar task previously. This inconsistency in executing actions, such as creating slides based on documents or generating tables, is something I would like to see improved over time. Another concern, though infrequent, is related to AI hallucinations. Sometimes, Copilot might go outside the context of your question and hallucinate a little bit. A key feature I would like to see developed is personalization. Currently, I have to repeatedly give instructions about the desired tone or the type of audience I am communicating with. I wish Copilot could learn from my past conversations and adapt to my priorities or preferred style of content generation. This would eliminate the need to provide the same instructions every single time, making the interaction more seamless and tailored to my individual workflow. Additionally, specific functionalities like customer segmentation are pretty much non-existent. I also haven't personally used it for tasks such as lead generation or campaign management, so I cannot comment on those aspects.

Microsoft 365 Copilot only knows what it has access to within your environment. The user must make sure all relevant files are synced so Copilot can read them. Sometimes Copilot doesn't fully understand what I am asking of it. In those situations, I have to rephrase and resubmit what I am asking of it. The pricing can be quite expensive. Depending on the size of your organization and how many licenses are required, the total price can accumulate very quickly.

Copilot has been a game-changer for me and our organization. The functionality and ease of use are truly exceptional. I can no longer do my daily tasks without it. I haven't explored the excel much but I've seen a few of the data quality suggestions it gave, and they are right. I am keen to get better at prompting so I can get even better use of it.

AI Delivers Strong Coding Support But Faces Response Speed and Prompt Limits

I really like the AI functionality, but I feel like it is lacking in certain aspects, especially in the base model. GPT-5 is generally a lot better in terms of response, but it also takes a while longer. I use it every day and usually have 10-20+ chats with it on any given day. I do not like the limitation on characters for prompts.
