Why social proof and user reviews matter for software vendors in 2026

Online reviews are one of the strongest forms of social proof in the software buying journey. Buyers rely on the experiences of others, especially those with similar business needs, to evaluate products, compare options, and build confidence before contacting vendors.

Our 2026 Software Reviews Preferences survey*, conducted among 1,588 U.S. respondents responsible for software purchases, shows that most buyers research extensively, reading reviews and comparing options before contacting vendors. This report highlights the top insights and trends shaping how reviews influence software selection.

1. Drive buyer confidence at every stage with strong reviews

Reviews guide buyers throughout the entire journey, from early exploration to final decision-making. Most buyers consider reviews important throughout the process, but they are considered especially critical during the final purchase check.

On average, buyers read 12 reviews per product, and they mainly filter them by overall rating, recency, and industry to quickly find the most relevant feedback. These filters help buyers focus on experiences that match their needs, making it easier to spot strengths and weaknesses that matter most.

Why this matters

Reviews give buyers the confidence to narrow choices and make informed decisions. Products with detailed, recent, and relevant reviews are more likely to be found and selected. Vendors who consistently collect and update reviews increase their chances of being shortlisted and purchased.

Meet buyer demand for high-impact reviews

High-quality, up-to-date reviews fuel every stage of the buyer journey. When your products’s feedback is detailed and recent, buyers don't just find your solution; they trust it.

How to collect reviews that matter:

  • Encourage the user to write a detailed review
  • Gather reviews that cover different industries/use cases
  • Ensure a continuous flow of fresh reviews to signal credibility
  • Use targeted questions to prompt context-rich responses
  • Seek reviewers from different backgrounds to cover varied buyer needs

2. Differentiate your software by showcasing clear, trusted user insights

Comparison is the main reason buyers read software reviews. Nearly 4 out of 5 buyers use reviews to get a broad perspective of each product, and 3 out of 5 look for detailed comparisons. Over half use websites with a review-based comparison function to see how products stack up on diverse aspects such as data protection and privacy, security certifications, overall performance, stability and reliability.

Why it matters

Reviews help buyers quickly spot differences and similarities between products. Clear, comparative information supports confident decisions and reduces hesitation, making it easier for vendors to stand out and be chosen.

Review platforms that pair clear comparison tools with social proof give buyers a clearer sense of how each product performs. Recognition elements such as Digital Markets badges add another layer of credibility by showcasing products recognized as top performers.

3. Boost your brand’s credibility with authentic and transparent reviews

Fake or unverified reviews are buyers’ top challenge when evaluating software. That’s why buyers value reviews that come from verified users. Nearly two-thirds of buyers always check author verification before trusting a review, and the other third of buyers check sometimes.

Buyers evaluate not only the reviews but also the platforms that host them, making trusted platforms a critical part of the decision process. They consistently trust established sources such as industry forums, review and comparison sites, and tech and business media websites.

Why it matters

Buyers need genuine, relevant reviews to feel confident. Verified, detailed feedback on trusted platforms boosts vendor credibility and visibility. Focusing on authenticity helps vendors reassure buyers and improves chances of being chosen.

Win the deal with trusted reviews

Authenticity is the ultimate sales tool. Prioritizing verified reviews on trusted platform sites earns you the industry recognition and the buyer confidence needed to win the deal.

When running a review campaign, focus on these factors:

  • Reviews written by verified users, ensuring credibility and relevance for buyers
  • Nuanced reviews that discuss both pros and cons, providing a balanced opinion that buyers find more trustworthy and helpful
  • Recent reviews that reflect the current state of your product, demonstrating ongoing value and responsiveness to market changes
  • Reviews from users in your target industries or with similar use cases, offering context that resonates with prospective buyers

4. Adapt your review strategy to the evolving role of AI in software research

Aside from review sites, search engines are the primary software research platforms, and many offer built-in AI overview features that expose buyers to generative AI content as they search. Buyers also turn to GenAI platforms like ChatGPT for summaries and opinions. Despite GenAI’s growing use, platforms with human-written feedback remain the most trusted source for software research.

Why it matters

Buyers use search engines and GenAI platforms to broaden their software research and discovery. Vendors who optimize their profiles on search and review platforms reach more buyers and enhance credibility. Keeping reviews authentic, detailed, and verified helps vendors stand out, even as GenAI tools gain influence.

Stand out in human and GenAI reviews

Strengthen your presence on search and review platforms while keeping reviews authentic to boost visibility, revenue, and trust. When collecting reviews, focus on these key points:

  • Ask users to name your software and key features for easy identification by humans and AI platforms
  • Encourage detailed reviews covering business context, challenges, and results to attract GenAI highlights
  • Request mentions of unique features or integrations to showcase your differentiators
  • Run regular campaigns for fresh, verified reviews to stay current and credible in AI and human recommendations

Trust, comparison, and visibility: How reviews shape software purchasing in 2026

Online reviews remain key to software buying, guiding decisions at every stage. In today’s AI-driven landscape, buyers consult both human-written reviews and AI-generated summaries. Still, authentic feedback from real users is the most trusted source.

Our survey shows trust and authenticity are top buyer priorities. Vendors who gather verified, detailed, and recent reviews build credibility and stand out. Comparison tools and digital badges boost recognition and help buyers choose confidently.

To succeed in 2026 and beyond, vendors must maintain strong visibility on search and review platforms, foster transparency, and provide industry and use-case-relevant feedback. Adapting review strategies to optimize for AI platforms by encouraging context-rich, detailed reviews ensures your product is highlighted in both human and AI-driven recommendations. Understanding buyer preferences and addressing authenticity concerns positions vendors to outperform competitors and grow revenue.

Methodologies

* Digital Markets’ 2026 Software Reviews Preferences Survey was conducted in December 2025 among 1,588 respondents in the U.S. The goal of the study was to understand buyer preferences regarding their use of online reviews to research business software, as well as the sources they find trustworthy and the aspects they find important. Respondents were screened for full-time employment at companies with more than one employee and who are at least partially responsible for software purchase decisions within their company. Respondents also reported consulting user reviews for most of their software purchases.
