Philip Walsh is a Director Analyst in Gartner's Software Engineering Practice. He helps software engineering leaders develop and implement strategies to build a world-class software engineering organization. His focus is centered on the the impact of AI on software engineering, specifically: Developer productivity and developer experience; Change management and upskilling; Workflow and process transformation and the evolution of the software engineering role; The AI Code Assistant market. Phil has a PhD in philosophy and was a professor prior to joining Gartner. His academic career involved publishing in scholarly journals and teaching courses on philosophy of mind and cognitive science, and philosophy of technology. This unique background uniquely positions his research at the intersection of technology and the nature of knowledge work. As such, he is also part of a cross-disciplinary group of analysts at Gartner providing thought leadership on artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Prior to joining Gartner Philip was a philosophy professor. He earned his PhD in philosophy, and has published and taught on topics including philosophy of mind and cognitive science, the history of 20th century philosophy, the ethics and epistemology of cognitive extension technology, and even a bit of classical Confucian philosophy.
