The Open Compute Project is an open, community-based project, originated by Facebook in April 2011. The aim is to achieve the greatest efficiencies for data center infrastructure. It is focused on releasing specifications and designs for data center infrastructure elements, with the community then able to identify areas where improvements can be made. Initial elements released included mechanical and electrical designs, motherboards, power supplies, and server chassis. These have expanded to include storage (Open Vault) and hardware management.
