Gartner first defined an IT infrastructure utility (IU) as a shared IT infrastructure architecture provided through on-demand services. More broadly, we define infrastructure utility services (IUS) as the provision of outsourced, industrialized, asset-based IT infrastructure managed services (below the business application functional layer). IUS are defined by service outcomes, technical options and interfaces, and are paid based on resource usage, allocation or the number of users served.
